Silicon Valley Bank Run 🏃

The 2nd and 3rd largest bank failures in US history both happened this month  Here's a quick thread on how it got here. Basically, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), the de facto bank of the startup world, bungled communications trying to reaffirm investors and depositors that it wasn't having a liquidity issue, but it backfired and only spooked them more, sparking a bank run and the second-largest bank collapse in US history. The federal government announced emergency measures to make sure all depositors would be made whole amid fears of further "contagion" and wider macroeconomic ripples.

Why we're following it 💰

SVB's collapse is one more in a string of "once-in-a-lifetime" historical events in recent years. It's sent shockwaves through the startup world and its resolution could have long-standing ramifications for banking and for tech. It's also spurred some, perhaps much-needed, introspection among VC's, the tech industry, and how they're perceived by the public. Your task should you choose to accept it: Stuff your money under a mattress...JUST KIDDING. THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE.

Other conversation starters to that the February freeze ❄️
  • AI tools are on the rise Slack and Discord are the latest to jump into the AI fray and announce ChatGPT integrations that will do things like summarize threads or even talk to coworkers for you. GPT4, the next and more-powerful iteration of OpenAI's ChatGPT, is also on the horizon.

  • T-Mobile acquires Ryan Reynolds' Mint Mobile for $1.35 billion. In 2020, Reynolds sold Aviation Gin for $610 million. Needless to say, the Deadpool actor has proven to be quite the savvy entrepreneur.

  • Multiversal comedy, Everything Everywhere All at Once became the most-awarded movie of all time before it swept in all the major categories at the 95th Academy Awards, with 7 awards total, and long-time coming awards for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and Jamie Lee Curtis.
